A CLEAR STARTING POINT

What is VAT Deregistration?

VAT deregistration is the FTA process for ending a VAT registration when the applicable conditions are met. A supported closure considers the reason, relevant dates, remaining transactions and the obligations that continue until the process is complete.

An inactive business can still have open returns, stock, assets, invoices or outstanding balances. We build a closure checklist around those facts instead of assuming that no recent sales means nothing remains to do.

The FTA distinguishes mandatory and voluntary deregistration conditions. We review the current criteria against your circumstances, proposed cessation date and records, then identify the application and final-return steps that need attention.

DEFINED WORK. USEFUL OUTPUTS.

What does our VAT deregistration support include?

We agree the work, deliverables and exclusions before starting. The following workstreams guide that conversation; they are not a promise that every case needs the same engagement.

Eligibility & date review

Assess why deregistration is being considered and the evidence supporting relevant dates. Identify any urgent application obligation.

Closure records

Map licence changes, cessation evidence and business correspondence to the application narrative.

Outstanding returns

Identify unfiled periods and discrepancies that may need separate correction before closure.

Stock & asset review

List remaining assets and inventory for assessment of any relevant VAT consequences. Do not assume disposal or private retention is automatically tax-neutral.

Application support

Prepare the information pack and coordinate submission through the authorised person, within the agreed scope.

Final handover

Track the outcome, final reporting actions and custody of records after closure.

HOW THE WORK MOVES FORWARD

From the first review to a documented next step.

  1. 01

    Establish the facts

Confirm the reason, chronology and applicable conditions.

  2. 02

    Resolve the checklist

Identify open transactions, records and reporting gaps.

  3. 03

    Prepare the request

Review the application and authorised submission arrangements.

  4. 04

    Complete the close

Track approval, final return and remaining payment actions.

We agree the sequence, information deadlines and review points before work begins.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT SUPPORT

Licence cancellation and VAT deregistration are different

Business closure often involves more than one authority. Keep separate owners and evidence for each process.

BUILT AROUND YOUR OPERATIONS

Different businesses. Different priorities.

Dubai mainland and free-zone businesses can have different reporting needs. We confirm the entity, activity and applicable requirements instead of assuming one approach fits every company.

Trading & distribution

Goods movements, imports and supplier records can affect the evidence needed. Describe the supply chain as well as the invoice.

Professional services

Contracts, milestones and customer arrangements help explain the actual supply. A description on an invoice may not be sufficient.

Retail & e-commerce

Include platform settlements, credit notes and transaction-level reports so the records can be reconciled beyond a bank deposit.

FEES & DELIVERY

A quote based on the work you need.

Fees for VAT deregistration are agreed after an initial scope review. Professional fees are separate from any applicable tax, penalties or authority charges. Confirm the deliverables and exclusions in the proposal.

  • Quality and availability of supporting records
  • Transaction complexity and unresolved questions
  • Required deliverables and follow-up support

PRACTICAL ANSWERS

VAT deregistration. Your questions answered.

Start here, then discuss the details that depend on your records, deadlines and business structure.

Ask the A&A team →
Does cancelling my licence cancel VAT automatically?

No. Treat the VAT deregistration process as a separate action and confirm its outcome in your tax account.

Can I stop filing after applying?

Do not assume the application ends reporting. Confirm the FTA outcome, effective date and the returns still required for your account.

Is there a final return?

A final return is part of the closure process. The FTA states that the final return and payable tax are due no later than 28 days from the effective deregistration date, which is the end of the final tax period.

What if the business still has assets?

Provide a complete asset and stock listing. Their VAT treatment needs review before the final position can be established.

Can deregistration remove old penalties?

No. Deregistration is not a penalty waiver. Outstanding tax, notices and potential response routes need separate review.

Do you handle the whole company liquidation?

This service concerns VAT closure. Legal liquidation, licensing, employee matters and other tax obligations need separately agreed support.
